Sanctuary On The Edge Of The
Natural World
Discover our lodge perched on the rim of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania. The crater is voted one of Africa’s Seven Wonders of the Natural World and it is legendary for being the largest unbroken, inactive volcanic caldera on Earth.
The Ngorongoro Crater has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for decades thanks to its biodiversity and immense natural significance, but it has also since received heritage status in recognition of the evidence relating to the evolution of humankind that exists within its boundaries.
The Ngorongoro Crater
so named after the Maasai words ‘ngor ngor’ which mimics the sound of the cowbell – is an untamed natural sanctuary for some of the densest populations of animals on the entire African continent. Due to the fact that it is a caldera, a bowl shaped volcanic cavity of 260 square kilometres, it is home to tens of thousands of mammals and you’ll be able to spot the Big Five here while on safari. Elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo reside within the crater and huge herds of wildebeest and zebra traverse the bowl during the annual migration.
Stunningly beautiful protected region
The Crater is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a stunningly beautiful protected region in Tanzania that comprises a portion of the southern Serengeti’s short-grass plains and the Ngorongoro Highlands, a range of ancient volcanoes on the west side of the legendary Great Rift Valley.
